If you can give your child only one summer experience this year, let it be this one!

Designed to build a foundation of nature knowledge and provide experience within our curriculum, we provide a fun, educational environment that deepens a child’s connection with nature. We’ll be outdoors the ENTIRE time and your child will learn:

· Nature-Based Games

· How to be safe in the outdoors

· To move in a quiet way

· How to Track Animals

· How to make a shelter

· How to make fire the “old way” – by friction

· How to use and learn from Field Guides

· To make plaster casts of animal tracks

· How to make string from a local plant

· Basic habits for nature awareness

Naturalist 2: Earth Crafts & Primitive Skills

Ages 5-7 & 8-12          Class size is limited.

The second in a series on connecting with nature!

This How-To day-camp is very project-based and we start our week by learning about fire: how and from where to collect wood, how to set up the fire-structure, and how to tend the fire safely. Campers in the older group carve their own bow-drill kit and immediately start learning how to make fire by friction. The younger kid's group takes part in activities that support their skill level and abilities. Fire becomes a central thread throughout the week as we use it to make bowls, spoons, and clay products. We'll also learn how to make a basket from Tule reeds and explore felting with wool. And there's still time for exploring and discovery during the week.

Projects:

· Bow-drill kit

· Tule reed basket or mat

· Wooden spoon and bowl

· Clay bowl

· Cooking with fire

· String from natural fibers

· Natural fiber art

· Shelter
